Introducing Beak, a fun collaboration between my classmate Mariell and me! This was part of a collection of short comics for young adults that our class produced — 9 pages per group, and a 48-page zine in total. We made it in a week, and tried to create threads that tied the different stories together within the zine. It was a great opportunity to practice working on projects like this in a team, and collaborating at a larger scale as well. I may have had a few little freak-outs — being paired with amazingly talented people means that it's easy to worry that your part of the work isn't measuring up! But all in all I think it went really well. We both worked on each of the pages, and created something that really feels like it belongs to both of us. We divided the pencil sketching, I inked, and Mariell did the colouring in the real world panels, while I worked on block colouring in the dream world panels. Mariell finished these up with some beautiful watercolour detailing and really brought them to life while I started cleaning up the scans and getting them ready for printing.
The funny thing is, we initially decided to do a bird story because Mariell is so incredibly talented at painting birds (find her beautiful work on instagram @mariell.art), but it worked out that I ended up being the one to paint the birds here, using illustrations from Mariell as a guide! So it really does feel hard to say where our individual work starts or stops here. That said, it is far more than anything I could have made on my own. Definitely in love with the result!
